When moving, it’s imperative to find a reputable moving company with a proven track record of quality and reliability. There are so many moving companies out there, you might wonder where to start. You can’t just tell from a Web page who is worth hiring; you have to look for recommendations. Here are some tips when you start your search:
- Look on the Better Business Bureau’s website. Click on “Find a BBB Accredited Business” and type in “Moving Company.” This will pull up all the BBB Accredited movers in your area. You can click on the name of the company and find a letter grade from A to F for that company. You can see any complaints that were filed, and if they were resolved.
- Check to see if they're a ProMover. The American Moving and Storage Association (“AMSA”) screens and certifies moving companies as “ProMovers”. These movers have passed a background check, and have agreed to AMSA’s code of ethics. You can also use the AMSA Mover Referral Service to receive quotes from up to six ProMovers.
- Use Facebook. Go to the moving company’s page and ask questions of the fans you find there. Be honest about the information you are seeking. Do you want to know if they will be gentle with your fragile boxes? Ask. Or go to your own Facebook friends and poll them for quality moving companies. People are more than happy to give their advice.
Watch out for online reviews. You really can’t trust them. Anyone can post reviews, including the moving company themselves. You wouldn’t take advice from a perfect stranger in most cases, so don’t trust Internet reviews just because they look official.
