DIY Home Renovation: How to Replace a Light Switch

by Admin 16. March 2011 09:33

Light switch cover replacement is a necessary evil when updating the look of your home. Here are some tips from Elliott’s Remodeling on how to DIY this quick home renovation. The most important part is to thoroughly understand how your power circuits work, so you can turn the power off of your light switch before starting this project. If you’re not 100% confident on how to do this, it is not recommended that you complete the steps below. Leave it up to a professional or someone who is familiar with how your home’s power works. If you’re confident and ready, here are the steps compliments of Elliott’s Remodeling:

  1. Turn the power off. Be sure you turn the power off before starting any of the steps below. This is a crucial step, as you could severely harm yourself.
  2. Know what kind of light switch you’re replacing. There are many different types of light switches: dual, single or triple gang. That’s just a fancy way of saying – know how many switches are on the light switch panel – one, two or three.
  3. Understand wiring. On the back of your light switch panel, there will be three wires: a positive (which is usually red), a negative (which is usually black) and your continuity (which is usually black or green).
  4. Know where the wiring is attached. You usually attach the negative and positive wires to the top of the panel, where the positive and negative symbols are indicated. The continuity wire typically goes at the bottom of the panel.
  5. Install the wires. Install the positive and negative at the top and the continuity on the bottom.
  6. Re-install your switch into the socket. Use a screwdriver to bolt the switch back into bracket.
  7. Turn your light power back on.
